What’s racist?

I was reading an article today which brought forth the question whether the Associated Press transcription of President Obama’s speech and the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) was racist.

Link to story.

Karen Hunter, an author, stated on a MSNBC show that she was upset that the AP transcription of Obama’s speech wasn’t cleaned up in the way that other news outlets did. Examples she used included the “dropped g’s.”

AP version: “Take off your bedroom slippers. Put on your marching shoes,” he said, his voice rising as applause and cheers mounted. “Shake it off. Stop complainin’. Stop grumblin’. Stop cryin’. We are going to press on. We have work to do.”

This transcription is what Hunter called “inherently racist.” This was a source of debate on the MSNBC program which a linguistics expert John McWhorter, stated that he believe that the AP’s transcription was correct and stated that Obama won the 2008 Presidental election due to how easily “he can switch into that [black] dialect.”

After reading the article, I thought about what is really racist. And after some thought, I concluded that it is just relatively. Depending on your particular mindset, you hear or see something in a completely different way.

At the same time seeing issues like this within the United States depresses me because it shows the divide between different groups of people in this country. For a country with that’s a melting point, there are a lot more racial conflicts than there should.

One of my biggest pet peeves is people who try to label whatever they possibly can as racism. But, at the same time I now understand that people see things in different lights and I am trying to be more respectful of others views even if I don’t agree with them.
